The White House reignited its hostility toward Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn. when its official X account shared a post appearing to tell her to return to her native Somalia.
Per Fox News, the post, which was shared on Monday, featured a 2024 photo of President Donald Trump waving from inside a McDonald’s drive-thru window. The White House shared the photo in response to a video of Omar, 43, saying she wasn’t worried about being deported.
“I have no worry, I don’t know how they’d take away my citizenship and like deport me,” Omar said in the October video. “But I don’t even know like why that’s such a scary threat. Like I’m not the 8-year-old who escaped war anymore. I’m grown, my kids are grown. Like I could go live wherever I want.”
Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, Omar emigrated to the U.S. settling in Arlington, Virginia. Her family later moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Minnesota is also home to the United States’ largest Somali immigrant population. Currently representing Minnesota’s fifth congressional district, Omar has been an American citizen since 2000.

Yet, Trump has always found ways and means to throw jabs at her while suggesting she is not an American. While addressing reporters in September, Trump claimed that Somalia was not ready to receive Omar.
“You know, I met the head of Somalia, did you know that?” Trump said, per Fox News. “And I suggested that maybe he’d like to take her back. He said, ‘I don’t want her.’”
Omar has also been relentless in firing back at Trump when he comes after her. The 43-year-old lawmaker ultimately responded to Trump’s claim, saying that he was lying.
“From denying Somalia had a president to making up a story, President Trump is a lying buffoon,” Omar said at the time. “No one should take this embarrassing fool seriously.”
