Las Vegas mourns 5-year-old boy fatally struck on way to school by driver with DUI warrant

Authorities in Las Vegas said a 5-year-old boy, who was being dropped off for school by his mother, was fatally struck by a man with an arrest warrant for driving under the influence in Texas.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the victim, identified as Kamari Jordan Wolfe, was a kindergartener at Somerset Academy, and the fatal October 6 incident occurred after the 5-year-old exited his mother’s car when they got to the school.

In a statement, the North Las Vegas police said preliminary details in the case established that Kamari was crossing the driveway when a van bypassed a line of stopped vehicles and fatally struck the minor. The 5-year-old later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

Authorities identified the driver of the van as 41-year-old Guillermo Cchochi Senobua and said the suspect “remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.” Police also did not suspect Senobua was impaired at the time of the accident. But after conducting a voluntary blood draw to determine if there was alcohol in his system, it was established there was a warrant for Senobua’s arrest for driving under the influence in Texas, police said.

The suspect has since been arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter and not giving his full time and attention to driving, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. In the wake of his death, Kamari’s grandmother, Kari Schultz, said her grandson was “full of life.”

“He never met a stranger. He wasn’t shy at all. He talked to everybody. He gave people hugs and he squeezed them so tight, you know, he just wouldn’t let go,” she added.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe that was set up for Kamari’s mother has raised more than $30,000, surpassing the $20,000 goal. The fundraiser also claimed that the driver of the van initially “attempted to leave” after Kamari was “run over multiple times.” He was, however, stopped “with the help of other parents.”
