Poem: Love Begets Life

African mom and baby

I visited an antenatal clinic and saw so many expectant Mothers. I saw the joy on their faces as they curiously asked questions of the nurses and doctors on duty. It was a beautiful sight demonstrating the very essence of love, which is to create a union, a relationship, an intimacy so strong that it forms a life. As I imagined what’s in their minds, I plugged in my earpiece, picked up my pen, and wrote:

From an expectant Mother to her unborn child:

As the night moves on and the days goes by I’m counting…
Patiently waiting for the day I’ll get a clear view…
As I joyfully wait for that time, I continue learning…
Hoping and praying that I’ll be worthy of you…
The joy in my heart as I celebrate my dream come true…
Through the sleepless nights I could feel your hands…
Wondering how I’ll feel when I look in to your eyes…
As I look at the mirror, I process how your face will glow…
And how I’ll live, stay, teach, protect, and watch you grow…
And finally as I feel you kicking inside…
Impatiently ready to view the world outside…
The joy I feel overwhelms the pain…
The promises I made in my heart to you, as I think of a name…
I remember the place and time when I first heard the good news…
And from that time on I began to expect the arrival of you…
I prepared a home to receive you with no form of excuse…
It’s interesting how now at the prime of prenatal period I’m still hoping…
How love can bring life, how your life will change my point of view…
You have given me love and the importance of life, a new meaning…
Whether girl or a boy, it can’t turn down the joy that I’m feeling…
I pledge to be all that you ever need, all you can count on…
So when we are gone there’s a guarantee to depend on…
It’s beyond words;
It’s blood, it’s life, it’s love, it’s you.
