The rising star currently plies his trade with the New York Jets in the National Football League (NFL). Previously, Corley was playing his college football at Western Kentucky, where he obtained all-conference honors in 2022 and 2023.
Growing up in Orange City, Florida, the 22-year-old playmaker later relocated to Kentucky and attended Campbellsville High School. During that period, he was playing both basketball and football.
His records include tackles of 95, two interceptions while playing as a cornerback, rushed out 1,025 yards, nine touchdowns, catching of 41 passes for 863 years and 14 touchdowns on offense as a junior.
College career of Malachi Corley
Originally, Corley was engaged for a cornerback position at Western Kentucky. However, he was handed a new position as a wide receiver when practicing during the preseason.
During his first season at Western Kentucky, he participated in nine games and caught six passes for 65 yards. Unfortunately, this was not counted for his eligibility due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
In 2023, Corley garnered an impressive 73 receptions for 691 yards and seven touchdowns. By dint of hard work, he was named first-team All-Conference USA as a redshirt sophomore after he impressively caught 101 passes for 1,295 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Corley’s professional career
The New York Jets recruited Corley in 2024. He signed a four-year rookie contract with the team on July 18, 2024.
Who is he related to?
Corley and ex-NFL-running-back Jeff Demps are related. Demps, Corley’s cousin, had a stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He reportedly played just two games for them in 2013.
Corley-Jets fumble
Malachi Corley made a mistake during the New York Jets and Texans game on October 31, 2024, which ended 21-13 in favor of his side.
After rushing for 18 yards, he lost a fumble. He got it wrong after the ball was dropped by him deliberately before crossing the goal line. On the heels of a replay review, officials decided it was a fumble and declared a touchback—leading to the ball being given to the Texans.
If not for the fumble rule, Corley would have secured his first career score and the Jets would have also led their opponents 7-0 at the time.
Despite the gaffe, his coach has not lost trust in him yet.
Reacting after the incident, interim coach Jeff Ulbrich was candid, stating that it was frustrating and he was angry at a point. However, he has a firm belief that Corley will learn a lot as he grows. Being optimistic, Urbrich added that the promising talent won’t make such a mistake again 10 years from now if he still plays in the league.
Corley was also shielded from reporters after the fumble occurrence following the game.
The Jets player has been in the trends after the fumble incident. Apart from media publications, he has been trending on social media.
He has finally broken his silence following the unfortunate fumble.
Corley later told reporters on Wednesday that he relished the moment just like those who were present at the MetLife Stadium.
Though he was stunned initially, the Jets player claimed his emotions were still high. According to him, words of encouragement from his teammates also motivated him.
Malachi Corley further indicated that he was not embarrassed despite the gaffe.
