Maui wildfires: Floyd Mayweather paid for 68 families to fly to safety, death toll hits 96

Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather has helped almost 70 families to flee Maui after fire razed through the Hawaiian island last week. According to TMZ, Mayweather flew 68 families from Maui to Honolulu, the Hawaiian capital situated 104 miles away. He has provided them with hotel rooms for several weeks and is also taking care of their food and clothing.

Ninety-six people have been killed in the Maui fire that broke out in the historic town of Lahaina on Tuesday, marking the most deadly U.S. fire in 100 years. The fires worsened due to a dry summer and strong winds from a passing hurricane, BBC reported. The death toll is expected to rise in the coming days. The U.S. Coast Guard said it has rescued over 15 people who had to flee the fires by jumping into the Pacific Ocean.

Authorities are still searching for other victims while scores of others affected are in shelters across Maui after fleeing. “We can only wait and support those who are living. Our focus now is to reunite people when we can and get them housing and get them health care, and then turn to rebuilding,” Hawaii Governor Josh Green said Saturday.

Oprah Winfrey, who owns property in Maui, also joined relief efforts in Maui as she donated pillows, nappies and shampoo bottles to people sheltering at the War Memorial Stadium, Daily Mail reported.
