Tracey and Chei Syphax are an entrepreneurial married couple from New Jersey who recently acquired Booker’s Restaurant & Bar in West Philadelphia. The couple acquired the property for $3.3 million, Trenton Journal reports.

The restaurant first opened in 2017 under the ownership of Saba Tedla, with the mission to provide excellent Southern cuisine and exemplary services. It pays homage to Booker Wright, a black waiter in Mississippi who was known for working in a “whites only” restaurant while managing a restaurant that catered to the Black community. Sadly, his open criticism of racism led to his tragic demise.

The new owners say they plan to keep the rich history of the restaurant intact, after securing ownership of the bistro through their firm, Phax Entertainment Group, LLC.

“As a 28-year serial entrepreneur and entrepreneurial instructor, I recognize great models, and Saba Tedla has built a great model of excellent service, and great food in a warm and inviting atmosphere that has made Bookers a staple go-to restaurant in the heart of West Philly,” said Tracey. “Our purchase of Bookers now opens endless possibilities for this well-known corridor. We are excited to become a member of this thriving up-and-coming neighborhood.”

The couple plans to bring their original flavor as a complement to the current menu, and to introduce weekly specials like Chop Lollipops and Bourbon Glazed Pork Chops, Fried Chicken Wings with Waffles, as well as Wings and Fries, according to Trenton Journal.

“Tracey and I are excited to take over a restaurant with such a great reputation and following. I have patronized Saba since Aksum and it is a surreal, full circle moment to own an establishment that made my transition to Philly feel like home,” said Cheri Syphax, COO of Phax Entertainment Group, LLC.

“We will keep the menu items our regulars have come to know and love, while listening to their needs and desires for something new. We will also create dishes and cocktails that will tickle and delight their palate and look forward to serving them with the same quality and excellence they have come to expect.”
