Writer Dream Hampton describes her thus: Wanuri has the vision, wild imagination and depth to deliver and her films have a knack for casting a spell.

Wanuri Kahiu is a film director, producer and author who was born in Nairobi, Kenya in 1980. Her short film Pumzi, Kenya’s first sci-fi movie was screened at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival as part of its New African Cinema program and earned the recommendation of American filmmaker.

Kahiu was also recognised for her 2018 feature, Rafiki. The film was banned in Kenya over its depiction of a same-sex relationship yet made history as the first film from Kenya to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. In the same year, the film got screened at the 2018 London Film Festival.
