Former NFL star Michael Strahan and his family owned a pet pig during his childhood, but it appears he had no idea his parents actually consumed it until he became an adult. The person who told him about his beloved pet’s fate thought he knew.
So who unintentionally spilled the beans to him? His former Good Morning America co-anchor Sara Haines. During The Weekend View on Saturday, Haines said that Michael’s parents Gene and Louise Strahan touched on that supposed “secret” during an interview in 2020. That interview took place before Michael’s father Gene passed away that same year, PEOPLE reported.
“I went to shoot with his parents before his father died because I wanted …to give him time with his parents, as one of five children where they just talked about him,” Haines said on Saturday, adding that Michael’s parents also told her that they once owned a pet pig. “They shared with me that they ate the pig.”
But Haines stated that it appeared Michael was unaware his parents had done that. “I come back and I’m giving Michael a hard time, as one would, and I joked about the pig,” she recalled. “And he’s like, ‘What are you talking about?’ He didn’t know. He didn’t know ‘cause they were all young.”

Haines said that the former New York Giants star ended up calling his mum to confirm if that was the case. “He was like, ‘I had no idea.’ And he called his mom,” she revealed. “And I was like, ‘I didn’t mean to betray the family trust! I just thought you told him!’ “
His parents cooking and eating their pet pig shouldn’t come as a big deal as Michael has been very vocal about their support and how they inspired him.
“I never knew I could accomplish so much, but my parents never act surprised,” he told PEOPLE in 2016. “They look at me as if there’s no limit. That helped me feel like there’s no limit.”
