Miguel and his ex-wife, Nazanin Mandi, dated for ten years before they got engaged in 2016 and married in November 2018. The former couple, however, divorced in 2022, and Miguel has usually been mum about what caused their separation.
But during an appearance on Club Shay Shay, the Girls Like You singer, whose real name is Miguel Jontel Pimentel, opened up about their divorce and how that happened, saying that he “wasn’t whole,” PEOPLE reported.
“I’m not saying that I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I got all the answers now,’ but even being able to say and admit that I’m not whole … it completely changes the way that I approach things,” Miguel said.
The 40-year-old explained that he “wasn’t in the headspace to be with anyone” and “didn’t know how to communicate that” as he was mainly concentrating on his career at the time.
He also admitted that “there’s a lot of things that I did wrong,” and he failed to adequately “set up” his relationship with Mandi.
“I didn’t just build the trust as just a friendship to protect that later on, the becoming a relationship, the way that I could have,” he said.

Miguel said he would have opened up to Mandi, 39, if the hands of time were turned. “I would have really said, ‘Hey, I’m actually not ready right now!’ But when you meet someone and you’re like, ‘Man, I really need something special here,’ I can see where everything happened,” Miguel said.
Despite their separation, Miguel said there is no ill will between him and Mandi as they maintain “a tremendous amount of love” and are “working very hard to not make it about what it was,” PEOPLE reported.
Miguel and his current partner, Margaret Zhang, welcomed their baby in 2024. He said his Always Time song, which is on his CAOS album that was released in October, gave him some healing.
“It allowed me to kind of look at myself and go, ‘You know, I made a lot of mistakes, man.’ I’m not perfect! Never been perfect. Never said I was perfect,” he stated. “And I’m a much more aware person now. And I hate that I had to learn it the hard way, but we must continue.”
Miguel also praised Mandi, describing her as an “amazing person” who “deserves the best.”
