A 24-year-old mother is facing attempted murder charges after police say she threw her two young children out of a second-story window before jumping out herself in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Saturday.

Dejhanay Jarrell was naked when she pushed an air conditioner out of the window of her Rockaway Parkway apartment at about 11 a.m. Saturday before throwing her two children, a one-month-old girl and a two-year-old boy, out of the window, police say.

She subsequently jumped to the ground and continued to harm the one-month-old baby girl, according to witnesses.

The newborn girl landed face down and is in critical condition at the hospital. She is being treated for a skull fracture, swelling of the brain and renal injuries, the New York Post reported.

Jarrell and the two-year-old boy were not critically injured, and are all at the hospital.

“The 2-year-old, he looked fine. He wasn’t crying, he wasn’t moaning in pain, but the infant looked like she was going in and out of consciousness because her eyes were- she was trying to open her eyes and they were closing. Like half of her face was bruised,” eyewitness Carl Chin said.

Neighbors are still shocked by the incident. “She’s been here for about three months. She was a good person, a family mother,” Herman Moultrie, 62, who lives in the building next door to Jarrell’s, told the New York Post. “She wasn’t hanging out in the streets or anything. I never knew she had problems like this.”

“I’m thinking she was tired of being alone or maybe she was abused.”

Chin said Jarrell told him that she was “tired of being by herself”.

The young mother faces two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault and two counts of reckless endangerment.
