Nigerian Oil Tycoon Dethrones Oprah Winfrey as the Richest Black Woman

A few weeks ago, it was announced that America’s sweetheart Oprah Winfrey will no longer be holding her esteemed and sometimes envied title as the World’s Richest Black Woman. It may have been surprising to the world to learn that kicking her out of the prestigious seat was none other than Nigerian Folorunsho Alakija, an oil magnate and fashion designer.

According to Ventures Africa, a monthly African business magazine, Alakija is estimated to be worth $3.3 billion, roughly $500 million more than Oprah Winfrey’s estimated $2.7 billion net worth.

The founder and owner of Famfa Oil, which owns a 60% interest in the offshore oil field OML 127 estimated to be worth $6.44 billion, Alakija made her wealth from the booming Nigerian industry. She is also a fashion designer and philanthropist, and has invested millions of dollars in real estate in Nigeria.

Earlier last month, Forbes Magazine also announced Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote as the Riches Black Man in the world, making the World’s Richest Black Man and woman both Africans, and Nigerians.
