The Nigerian army yesterday rescued 149 girls and women in the ongoing operation against Boko Haram insurgents in the country’s Northeastern region.

According to Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Onyeama Nwachukwu, the army freed 54 women and 95 children.

“On Saturday, the troops made further operational exploit into Boko Haram’s hideout at Yerimari-Kura, in a deliberate operation to rescue hostages held by the insurgents in their hideout. In the encounter, troops killed three Boko Haram insurgents and captured five,” he said in a statement.

The survivors received medical attention at the 21 Brigade Medical Centre.

The operation comes in the wake of Boko Haram attacking a military base and surrounding villages near the city of Maiduguri, killing 18 people and wounding 84 others.

Just last month, the insurgent group returned 100 school girls they had kidnapped in Dapchi.
