Bernard James Freeman, alias Bun B, has taken steps to address the damage inflicted by Category 1 Hurricane Beryl in Houston, his hometown.
On Thursday, the well-known rapper organized a food drive at a Kroger on E. Sam Houston Parkway and put up a booth at One Church at Bethel’s Family in the impacted city to provide more than 500 smashburgers from his Trill Burgers eatery.
Bun B has taken it upon himself to feed the residents of H-Town while the conditions cool off, even though his restaurant has been closed until further notice owing to the severe weather.
According to HipHopDX, his restaurant collaborated with Levi’s on Saturday to give away an additional 713 burgers to celebrate the city’s original area code, bringing the total to over 1,700.
He wrote on Instagram, “Happy 713 Day. We’re handing out 713 burgers with @levis at the @houstongalleria. Here’s how to find us and navigate the line. ***DRIVE UP ONLY; no walk ups due to safety hazards. Each person in each car will receive 1 ticket per burger. You must have a ticket to redeem your burger. Once all tickets are gone we will not have any more***
“Thank you @krogerco for supplying bottled water and Lone Star Tents & Events for helping us to make this happen. We love y’all, Houston. #houston #713day #trillburgers.”
His gesture of support was warmly received by the internet, with one user writing, “Not all hero’s wear capes.” Another person who benefited from his generosity stated, “Thank you sooo much for the burger it was sooo good and your crew is nice! thank you guys.”
The rapper recently shared why he became a restaurant owner. “A lot of people think this rap shit is going to get you everywhere you want to go,” he said in an interview with the 85 South Comedy Show in February. “No, they want to know how you became successful; what is your skillset; what did you work hard and train to do; how does that transcribe into other spaces?”
