Robyn ‘Rihanna’ Fenty has made history as the first black woman to cover Vogue Hong Kong exactly a year after becoming the first black woman to appear on the cover of British Vogue’s September issue in 2018.
The Grammy award-winning artist is set to cover the September issue of Vogue Hong Kong, going to be released this Sunday, September 1, and was described as an ‘icon for our times and the ultimate fashion force.’
The September issue of every magazine in the world is considered the most important; it has more content, more advertising and more editorials. The numerous pages are filled with adverts by its commercial clients and designers who want to broadcast their printed campaigns.
It also marks the beginning of a new season, almost like the ‘back to school’ activities that characterize the end of summer and the beginning of autumn/winter. Thus, the corresponding autumn/winter collections are the most influential of the year and fashion houses take it seriously.
In the September issue of Vogue Hong Kong, Rihanna was photographed in clothes by designers like Louis Vuitton, Dries Van Noten, and Alexander McQueen selected by fashion director Anya Ziourova.
Her middle-parted updo was done by hairstylist Yusef and make-up artist Kanako Takase did her minimal make-up.
The cover drops just a few days shy of the Asia launch of her beauty line Fenty Beauty in Hong Kong and presents her as the embodiment of luxury fashion and couture as photographed by new photographer Hanna Moon.
“Singer/actor/businessman/philanthropist/designer, Rihanna has been constantly expanding her career and identity, never stopping at a success, and it goes without saying. Under the lens of the new photographer Hanna Moon, who is good at finding the signs of the times, Rihanna is surrounded by strong colors, beautiful jewels and flower elements, and still looks at the camera with a demeanor, so that the world can understand that the so-called era icon is Under the gorgeous and title aura, still, gentle, powerful,” Vogue writes in their introduction.
Previews of the cover on social media evoked complimentary comments from other celebrities like reality diva Tiffany ‘New York’ Pollard, Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi, and photographer duo Inez and Vinoodh. Here are the photos:
