Plastic Bottles – Nigeria

Over the past year, schools in Nigeria are making it possible for parents to pay the fees of their kids with used plastic bottles that they collect and clean. Through the adaptation of the RecylclesPay Educational Project, a campaign under the African Clean Up Initiative (ACI), parents collect and clean used bottles which are then taken to the schools. The schools in turn call in the recyclers who weigh and pay for the bottles. When payment is made, the schools record the number of bottles each parent sold to be able to pay for the fees of their wards. The new system is making it possible for many parents to now afford an education for their words and slowly help solve the plastic waste problems that Nigeria is facing.
