Goats for fees is no joke

Goats – Zimbabwe

In Zimbabwe, parents can pay off their children’s fees with goats. The news about this first made waves in 2017 when some schools adopted the barter system to help parents from less privileged backgrounds ensure that their children can still gain access to education. In that same year, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Dr Lazarus Dokora made the barter system an official school fees paying system where schools, markets and parents work together to make the transaction profitable for all parties and most importantly free of conflict. Since 2017, the system has been working well and many more children are in school. In some parts of the country, some people also work for schools one way or the other to pay for fees.
