Hundreds of protesters in the central Somalia town of Galkayo are demanding justice for 12-year-old Aisha Ilyas Adan who went missing for a few hours and was later found dumped near her house after she was gang-raped, tortured and murdered.

The residents of the town, mainly women, marched through the streets on Monday calling on the Puntland State authorities to take action and find the rapists to face justice.

The regional police chief, Ahmed Osman, told Garowe Online that suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of Aisha and others are on the run.

“She was kidnapped, and subsequently gang-raped, tortured, and brutally killed before being dumped outside her house in the town,” Osman confirmed.

Aisha Ilyas Adan was reported missing on Sunday evening after she didn’t return from a market in the town which is notorious for rape and clashes between local militia.

The rape and murder of the 12-year-old has left many Somalis enraged on social media as thousands have expressed anger while demanding justice and a probe to arrest all perpetrators.
