A 19th-century researcher, Charles Staniland Wake, documented in 1892 that when he encountered a man with albinism in one of his travels through Africa, locals explained to him that the man was a demonic ghost.

Indeed, albinos were taught to be harbingers of bad luck and so were killed during infancy among some of the ethnic groups.
