About 20 road traffic collisions occur every day in Malawi, according to WHO, two of which are fatal and two serious injuries. About a 1,000 people are killed in road traffic crashes in Malawi every year.

Malawi records the third highest incidence of motor crashes anywhere in the world at a rate of 35.0 deaths per 100,000 people.

The poor state of roads coupled with poorly maintained cars and lack of street lighting are significant causes of the increase in car accidents in Malawi.
