Irene Obera
The 84-year-old’s first time on the track was in her 20s after seeing a film about female track athletes while attending a conference for physical education teachers.
She joined a track club in San Francisco where she developed her speed and passion for sports. The retired educationist subsequently went on to run in the 1960 and 1968 Olympic trials and outshone other athletes at the Masters level in her 40s and 50s.
At the age of 80, she was urged by her coach to enter into other track events such as the long jump. She has since been setting world records in the 80-84 age group.
Obera stays active by walking two-and-a-half miles per day. She hits the gym three to four times a week and does bowling and tennis on a regular basis.
