Jean Kambanda
Jean Kambanda became Prime Minister of the caretaker government of Rwanda two days after the assassination of the President.
He was held to be criminally responsible after it was found that he did not intervene to stop the genocide that took place. ICC court in Arusha, Tanzania sentenced the former prime minister to life imprisonment for genocide in 1998 after describing his crimes during the 1994 slaughter of hundreds of thousands of Tutsis as “widespread and atrocious”.
Kambanda, the first man convicted under the 1948 Genocide Convention written in the wake of the Nazi holocaust, pleaded guilty in May to six counts of genocide and crimes against humanity.
