Habib Bourguiba
Born on August 3, 1903, he was a lawyer and nationalist and the first president of Tunisia serving from 1957 to 1987. Bourguiba earned the title of “Supreme Combatant” after playing a pivotal role in ending France’s 75-year colonial grip on Tunisia.
A co-founder of then-popular anti-imperialist Neo Destour political party, Bourguiba was arrested and exiled several times for leading rebellions against colonial France. He died on April 6, 2000, and was buried in a mausoleum in the city of Monastir.
