Zora Neale Hurston was one of America’s most influential writers, known for books such as Their Eyes Were Watching God and  Dust Tracks on a Road.

In 2018, she made headlines when her account of the life of Cudjo Lewis, the last known person to survive the transatlantic slave trade, was published. Barracoon, The Story of the Last Slave was published by Harper Collins after a 1931 interview with the last survivor of the slave ship Clotilde was discovered.

Born on January 7, 1891, Hurston was the daughter of two ex-slaves. She made a name for herself with her anthropological work and for contributing to the Harlem Renaissance.
