Alassane Ouattara was finally sworn in as president of Côte d’Ivoire, about six months after he won the election.
President Ouattare was inaugurated in Yamoussoukro, the capital, on Saturday, May 21.
Ouattara obtained authority after former president, Laurent Gbagbo, was arrested on Monday, April 11. Gbagbo had refused to concede power after elections took place in the country, which led to political instability.
Riots and clashes ensued between the military, which backed Gbagbo, and French troops and UN forces, which backed Ouattara. The clashes claimed almost 3,000 lives.
Ouattara will set up a new government, and legislative elections are expected to take place before the year ends.
