Heels are an important staple in most women’s lives. They come in all kinds of colors, shapes and sizes, and sometimes, we plan our wardrobe around them.
Unfortunately, The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists (SCP) has reported that there may be an increase in the number of people who develop arthritis as a result of wearing heels.
Osteoarthritis is one of the most common disorders of the joints. It is a condition that is caused by the wear and tear of the cartilage in the joints. The cartilage prevents the bones from rubbing together. If it damaged or lost it could cause pain and stiffness in the affected joint. The most commonly affected joint is the knee.
Heels influence our posture and the way we walk. The higher the heels, the more pressure we place on our joints, which increases the risk for developing osteoarthritis.
A poll of 2,000 women, conducted by the SCP in the United Kingdom, found that 25 percent of the participants wore heels everyday or frequently.
Professor Anthony Richmond from the SCP recommends that women choose wisely when choosing an “everyday shoe.” He suggests a one-inch heel height with a shock absorbent sole. When you look in all of the fashion spreads and store catalogs, there are not too many one-inch heels that catch the eye. However, it may be necessary to sacrifice a little bit of fashion for a lifetime of good health.
