Today, March 31, 2021, marks the second anniversary of the passing of acclaimed Los Angeles rapper Nipsey Hussle. The Eritrean-American and Crenshaw native was fatally shot in front of his Marathon Clothing store at 3420 W. Slauson Ave. in South Los Angeles.
Neighborhood Nip, as he was affectionately known, is fondly remembered for his poignant lyrics and story-telling prowess about life in South Central Los Angeles. Through his music, Nipsey painted a vivid picture of how he rose above all obstacles to eventually become a self-made man. As a matter of fact, the Double Up rapper was on course to have a stellar year following the release of his 2018 Grammy-nominated Victory Lap album prior to his death.
Even outside music, Nipsey, born Ermias Davidson Asghedom, replicated the same work-ethic and was widely known for his entrepreneurial savviness as he owned a handful of businesses along the block he was shot. The Racks in the Middle rapper was also an avid advocate of financial freedom and literacy and occasionally shared tips on how to attain that.
