Keith Agee, 20, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting death of his child’s mother. According to prosecutors, he committed the act of murder because he thought the victim, who was only 18 years old, had given him an STD.
As per the court documents, Keith Agee was given a life sentence last Wednesday for the planned murder of Brooklyn Sims, according to People. According to the records, he was declared “not guilty” of aggravated battery in connection with the injuries sustained by two other people at the location.
On August 11, Sims was shot and killed while working at a Pensacola Home Depot. On the day of the incident, Keith Agee was taken into custody. Sheila Agee, 50, his mother, was also detained in Washington County a few days after the incident and charged with murder for allegedly assisting Keith Agee in the crime’s planning.
According to Court TV, Sheila Agee worked with Sims at Home Depot and allegedly texted Keith Agee the store’s address on the day of the shooting. Shelia Agee allegedly wrote “As long as you don’t shoot me,” in a text message exchange with her son, released by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and published by WEAR CBS.
Sheriff Chip W. Simmons of Escambia County said in a statement, “The murder itself is unbelievable, but to know the mother knew about it and helped coordinate it is incomprehensible.”
The 20-year-old felon was driven to murder Sims because he suspected she had given him an STD, officials said. He told the jury during his testimony that he felt betrayed and hurt to find out he had an STD after having sex with Sims.
“I said, ‘Hey, you gave me something.’ She said, ‘Not this again,’ and turned around and proceeded to walk off from me. I’ve never been so mad in my life. I pulled my firearm from my waistband, and I proceeded to shoot Brooklyn,” he recounted, according to WKRG.
However, after the verdict in Keith Agee’s trial was read, the state revealed evidence proving Sims did not have an STD. In court, Bridgette Jensen, Assistant State Attorney, stated, “I know in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter, but we just wanted to give Miss Sims a little bit of dignity.”
According to People, the deceased’s mother stated that, while she does not hate Keith Agee, she cannot forgive him.
“I’m raising his daughter. That day, Casey lost her mother, her father, and her grandmother,” she lamented.
Sheila Agee is currently awaiting trial for first-degree murder. She has pled “not guilty” and is scheduled to appear in court in February.
