Terry Killens is a former Tennessee Titans player who is set to make history as the first person to play in and officiate a Super Bowl. The 49-year-old played for the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans from 1996 to 2000. During this time, he played as a backup linebacker for the Titans in Super Bowl 34, according to WZTV.
Moreover, Killens played linebacker and defensive end for Penn State from 1992 to 1995 and was part of the Nittany Lions’ last undefeated season in 1994. According to SI.com, Killens was second-team all-Big Ten as a defensive end in 1995 and was a third-round draft pick of the Houston Oilers in 1996.
After retiring, Killens became a football official in 2013. The Cincinnati native and Purcell Marian High School graduate officiated in college football and the former American Alliance of Football before joining the NFL in 2019.
He has now been named part of the Super Bowl 58 officiating crew. He will serve as the umpire of the eight-member crew that will officiate Super Bowl 58 when the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas.
His appointment comes on the heels of the completion of his fifth regular season. Working as an umpire, one “can spot him positioned behind the defensive line and a layer of linebackers. His job is to look for holds or other assorted illegal blocks,” according to Yard Baker.
