Ayo Edebiri might have played Envy in “Inside Out 2,” but she’s far from envious of any other movie at the box office. The reason is simple. Her Pixar sequel has shattered expectations, pulling in an astounding $295 million globally during its opening weekend.
With $155 million domestically and $140 million internationally, it’s now the second-largest animated debut of all time, behind “Incredibles 2” in 2018.
“Inside Out 2” does not only boast the biggest opening weekend of the year but also the first to surpass $100 million domestically since “Barbie” last July, according to TMZ.
The Pixar sequel, set in the same child’s mind as the 2015 hit, introduces new emotions like Maya Hawke’s Anxiety, Adèle Exarchopoulos’ Ennui, Paul Walter Hauser’s Embarrassment, and Edebiri’s Envy, causing a major buzz at theaters.
Best known for her work in TV and indie films, Edebiri’s role in this sequel is seen as a major leap into blockbuster territory. Already a Golden Globe and Emmy winner for “The Bear,” this marks her first significant role in a box office hit.
With more episodes of “The Bear” and a starring role in a “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” film on the horizon, Edebiri’s star is poised to rise even higher.
“Inside Out 2” has everyone feeling joy, not sadness, especially Edebiri. The film’s success will undoubtedly have her contemplating her next career moves.
