A 32-year-old Georgia mother has been arrested and charged in connection with her 7-year-old son’s death after his head got stuck in a car window while she was passed out in the driver’s seat.
Police said they responded to an Atlanta home on the morning of April 6 after they received a report about an “unresponsive” child who had been found, an arrest warrant stated, per PEOPLE.
The deceased minor, identified as Mazi, was in the back seat of his mother Kandice Grace’s vehicle when he was found with his head stuck in the window. The warrant also stated that Mazi was “seated beside two younger siblings.”
The Atlanta Police Department, in a press release, stated that Mazi was “not alert, conscious, or breathing.” Mazi was later pronounced dead at a hospital he was taken to.
Authorities said that Mazi’s mother was “passed out in the driver’s seat” when her son was found with his head stuck in her car window. “While she was passed out in the driver’s seat, Mazi got stuck in the back seat window,” the warrant states.
A male witness, who spoke with police, said that Grace came to her home the night before the fatal incident. Grace’s kids allegedly remained in her car as she was against bringing them inside the home of the witness, per PEOPLE. She is said to have spent a brief time inside the home before leaving.
The witness, however, stated that he saw Grace’s car at the parking lot the next morning, and her son’s “head was hanging out of the window.” “He began banging on the car to wake up Ms. Grace,” the warrant added.
Authorities said that Grace was with her youngest child and at a neighbor’s home when investigators later responded to the scene.
“Investigators attempted to speak to Ms. Grace, but she kept passing out while sitting up and holding her child,” the warrant states.
Grace underwent a blood and urine test, and she tested positive for opioids and THC. Grace, who is currently in custody, has been charged with second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children.
