On Friday, November 21, Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene unexpectedly announced that she would resign from Congress on January 5, 2026.
Greene’s announcement also came after President Donald Trump announced that he had withdrawn his endorsement and support for Greene, 51, following their public falling out.
During an interview with CNN‘s Jake Tapper on Sunday, Texas lawmaker Jasmine Crockett weighed in on her rival’s resignation, stating that Greene was unable to withstand the “heat” stemming from being “on the other side of the president,” PEOPLE reported.
“You know what? Honestly, I was like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me,’” Crockett, 44, told Tapper. “You’re on the other side of the president for one week, and you can’t take the heat? Imagine what it is to sit in my shoes, to not only be on the opposite side of him, but to have people like her who are constantly fanning the flames of hate,” she added.
“And imagine what those threats look like when you literally are someone like me.”
Crockett also stated that despite Greene and Trump’s public disagreements, her concentration remained on serving Texas’s 30th congressional district.
“But at the end of the day, I know that I serve the people of Texas 30,” the Democratic lawmaker said. “So my job isn’t to be there and necessarily do whatever is going to make the president not be on my back, but instead is to focus on making sure that I can push forward with policies that are positive for Texas 30.”
In May 2024, Crockett fired back at Greene after the latter made comments about eyelashes during a House Oversight Committee meeting.
“I don’t think you know what you’re here for. I think your fake eyelashes are messing with your reading,” Greene told Crockett at the time, causing her to later respond.
“I’m just curious, just to better understand your ruling. If somebody on this committee starts talking about somebody’s bleach-blonde, bad-built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?” Crockett said in response.
Greene announced her resignation in a video on X, stating that she won’t “be a ‘battered wife’ hoping it all goes away and gets better.”
Crockett similarly touched on Greene’s announcement in a post on X, stating that she “didn’t see this coming but the threats that come with being on the opposite side of Trump ARE REAL!”
“People need to wake up! Trump only knows how to use people up & then cast them aside when he’s done… he did it to his VP, he’s done it to those that wanted the Epstein files, he did it to those that believed he cared about their struggles, & now he’s doing it to one of his most loyal followers, MTG,” she added.
“Going forward, NO ONE, elected or otherwise, should allow any person to coax them into creating a culture of violence. MTG referenced not wanting to be a battered woman…”
Crockett continued: “I’ll say this my granny used to say don’t play with fire, because you just may get burned. I’m still waiting for Republicans to stand firmly against the president’s death wishes on sitting members of the House and Senate!
“My final word on this is that my office reached out to MTG’s to work on some member safety legislation. I’m serious about working collaboratively on this effort if there is an interest. We can get it drafted before January.”
