Fisk University basketball player Andre Bell, 20, was fatally shot on the highway in Nashville on Sunday, TMZ reported.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said that prior to the fatal incident, Bell and his friends had attended a gymnastics event. Authorities said that they subsequently got into Bell’s white Nissan Sentra and drove on the interstate.
Bell’s friends said that a dark sedan stopped beside their car while they were returning to campus, adding that shots were then fired.
“The Sentra slowed and spun back into traffic before colliding with a red pickup truck,” the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said. “The dark sedan kept going.”
Authorities said that Bell was taken to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his head. He, however, did not make it.
In a statement on Monday, Fisk University’s basketball team head coach, Jeremiah Crutcher, paid tribute to Bell and expressed his condolences to his family.
“He was a dominant force on the Fisk University Men’s Basketball team, but he was most remembered for his infectious smile, loving personality, and unique ability to always bring warmth to a room,” Crutcher said in the statement.
“We now have a deep absence in our program, but more importantly, we have a deep pain in our hearts. He will be truly missed. Our thoughts and unwavering prayers are with his family and the little kids in his family and in Nashville who looked up to him.”
Bell was a high school basketball player at Sacred Heart of Jesus in Jackson, Tennessee, before he enrolled at Fisk University, TMZ reported. The deceased 20-year-old basketball player and student was majoring in business administration.
Bell’s killing is being investigated by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department Homicide Unit.
