New undergraduate students at a Mozambique university were forced to drink and bath in urine and faeces in an initiation ceremony.
They also had their hair shaved.
The photos from the ceremony at the Unizambeze’s agriculture, forestry and engineering faculty in central Zambezia province sparked outrage when they were shared on social media.
“The initiators cut our hair. It was horrific. It was unbearable. They forced human urine and faeces into our mouths. We were bathed in urine and they rubbed our noses with faeces,” one of the victims, Artemiza Nhantumbo, told STV, a privately owned TV station.
The provincial director of higher education, Cardoso Miguel, has said investigations are underway and appropriate action will be taken, reports BBC.
“The inquiry committee will assess the degree of involvement of each student – some will probably be suspended, and others may be expelled.”
