Lagbaja, a Nigerian Afrobeat musician who was born Bisade Ologunde, wears a mask, as always, during his performance.

For lovers of old African pop music, Afrobeat seems to be the best choice as it provides a touch of original live African traditional music, fused with jazz, blues and funk music.

Today Afrobeat and Afrobeats are two very distinct music genres that seem to confuse several people, however one was born out of another. Afrobeat can be referred to as the early form of African popular music that infused traditional African music with western music and instruments. Fela Kuti has been widely acknowledged as the father of Afrobeat.

On the other hand, Afrobeats has been described as a more popular African popular music that takes its inspiration from Afrobeat and infuses rap and other western music elements. Musicians like Wizkid, Dbanj and Davido have produced what is now Afrobeats, Afrobeat with an ‘s’.

Despite Afrobeats taking over the airplay, there are still African musicians who produce Afrobeat music keeping the genre very much alive.

Here are 5 African musicians who still produce and perform Afrobeat music
