In the past year almost 1 billion people across the world volunteered their time to an organisation, a report by Gallup said.
The report, which sought to find out the most generous countries in the world, stated that more people are more likely to help a stranger in need than to give money or their time. It sampled 146 countries and came up with a Civic Engagement Index, which rated the level at which individuals engaged with the local communities and helped them in kind and cash.
Top three on the list is Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, but most of the most generous countries in the world are developing countries in Africa and the Middle East.
