Patricia Bath
Patricia Bath is a revolutionary medical practitioner specializing in Ophthalmology. She was the first African-American to finish a residency in Ophthalmology at New York University and later co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness. She is known for the invention of a device called Laserphaco Probe for the removal of cataracts using a laser beam. In 1988, she received a patent for her invention, becoming the first female African-American doctor to receive a medical patent. The Laserphaco probe increased accuracy in the performance of cataracts surgery as against the previous manual-based procedure of conducting surgeries of such nature. Her works in the field of ophthalmology are based on her notion of “eyesight is a basic human right.”
