At just five years old, Maddox Lopez is a member of Mensa. Meachel, his mother, and her husband, Delano Lopez, are excited about their son’s accomplishments, joining the top 2% of the population with an IQ of 130 or higher.
Maddox already knows the times tables in pre-kindergarten, which most students do by third grade. He even practices problem-solving with computer games.
Despite being talented themselves, Maddox’s parents are particularly proud of their son, who is following in his older sister Declan’s path. Declan became a member of the exclusive and esteemed society a year ago.
The New Jersey mother said both of her children like studying, although there are differences.
“Maddox is all about math and coding, and he finds back doors on video games and programs, where Declan is just like an intellectual who loves to learn anything,” she told WABC.
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. The children’s father is also a Mensa member and a teacher in Jersey City. He believes that his wife is the real foundation of his children’s intelligence.
He stated, “She was doing a lot of extra work with the kids. Even once they started back to school after COVID, she had a whole schedule up, and every day would be a certain different subject.”
The home message board is dedicated to scientific and mathematical themes.
Meachel remarked, “You have to let the kid kind of lead a little bit because then they’re not going to enjoy it, and they’re not going to enjoy learning, and I don’t want that to be. I don’t want to create a situation where my child is amazing but they don’t want to learn because I’ve been too stringent or strict.”
She went on to say that she educates her children “to be humble and to be gracious.”
