Throughout history, there have been scores of notable women, but none quite as dominant and mighty as these women warriors who fought back against a male-dominated world.

They were mothers, sisters, daughters, wives and warriors. They handled swords and guns, fought battles, and dealt with royalty.

Though sometimes outnumbered and overpowered by men in battle, these fearsome female fighters have each left an indelible mark on history.

Let’s take the time to celebrate the following unsung heroes who fought tirelessly and in some cases, lost their lives to effect equality and strive towards ending slavery, segregation, and racism:
