Grande Hotel Beira
Known as Africa’s most luxurious hotel, Mozambique’s Grande Hotel Beira operated between 1954 and 1963. It was built with the intention of providing luxurious accommodations for famous and wealthy visitors from Portugal, South Africa, and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).
That did not come to pass and it had to close because of lack of guests.
It served as the military base for guerilla fighters during the Mozambique Civil War and is currently a home for squatters.
