The murder of West African migrants
In July 2005, Jammeh ordered the execution of more than 50 Ghanaians, Nigerians and other West African migrants in Brufut and Ghana Town.
The migrants who were on their way to Europe were mistaken for mercenaries out to overthrow Jammeh. They were detained by Jammeh’s army called the Jungulers who took direct orders from the former president.
Only one person, a shoe seller called Martin Kyere survived. He had jumped out of the pickup truck that was transporting them to an unknown location. He dodged the bullets and the searchlights and eventually made it to safety. He is currently a witness in a case to bring the former president to justice.
