Salif Keita, Mali
Born in August 1949 in Djoliba, Mali, Salif Keita is Africa’s most beloved Afro-pop singer and songwriter. Many people refer to him as the “Golden Voice of Africa.” Keita was ostracized by his family and community because of his albinism, which in the Mandinka culture is viewed as a sign of bad luck. He eventually moved to Bamako where he joined the government sponsored Super Rail Band de Bamako. Keita has produced amazing bodies of work, including his first album Moffou. His other albums include M’Bemba and La Difference.
