So far, Eritrea, Rwanda, Mauritania and Mali have instituted strict bans on the import of plastic bags.

Malawi banned the importation, production and use of thin plastic bags in 2014. An initial ban was initiated in 2012 however, the Plastic Manufacturers Association of Malawi (PMAM) obtained a court order which ceased the ban.

Government officials also barred plastic carrying bags, alcohol sachets and plastic papers with a thickness of fewer than 60 microns.
