6 presidents compromising democracy in Africa by extending presidential term limits

Congo, Brazzaville

In 2015, voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum to remove the two-term limit and 70-years age limit for candidates.

The country’s president, Denis Sassou Nguesso, 74 has been in power from 1979 to 1992 and from 1997 to date. After winning a third term in 2016, he is effectively president for life should he win slated elections.
