Declare yourself president for life
Declaring oneself as the president for life has been a move by many African dictators. From Malawi’s Hastings Banda to Tunisia’s Habib Bourguiba, these dictators were trying to show their might and superiority.
However, it did not always work. Bourguiba was deposed in 1987; Idi Amin was ousted in 1979; Macias Nguema was deposed and executed in 1979; and Bokassa declared himself emperor, three years before he was deposed; and Hastings was stripped of his title with the promulgation of a new constitution in 1993.
