The Colour Purple

Released in 1965 and starring Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg, this movie talks about an African-American woman (Whoopi Goldberg), living in the South who survives abuse and bigotry. Her father married her off to one Albert Johnson and that is where things got worse for her. She was, however, hopeful that she would one day be able to reunite with her sister.
