Christopher George Latore Wallace, known by his stage name, The Notorious B.I.G, was a rapper, and songwriter, who was described as the most talented rapper of all time. Growing up in the slums in Brooklyn, New York, Wallace’s life was shortlived as he was killed at the prime of a prominent career.

He was known for his boisterous yet laid back and distinctive rap style. Many say he was the perfect lyricist.

Born on this day in 1972, the story of his transformation from a drug dealer and street hustler to one of hip hop’s premier artists served as inspiration to youngsters who set out to be like him.

After several hits and also working with some of the best producers including Sean “Puffy” Combs, who signed him, his 1994 hit album, Ready to Die made him a central figure in the hip hop scene in New York and the East Coast.

Several accolades soon followed including the 1995 Billboard Music Awards, Soul Train Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, and ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards.

His dominance in the East Coast generated a tense rivalry with West Coast’s Tupac Shakur.

On March 9, 1997, while visiting Los Angeles, Wallace was murdered in cold blood in a drive-by shooting. According to reports, the assailants remain unidentified to date.

Several songs and albums were released after his death. Early this year, The Notorious B.I.G was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside Whitney Houston.
