Mv Mtongwe

In Kenya in 1994, Mv Mtongwe capsized just 40 metres from the Kilindini Harbour, killing at least 200 people onboard. Nightfall and high tides in the Likoni Channel made rescue difficult.  Like in most other cases, it was discovered that the ferry had carried 100 more passengers beyond its 300 capacity. The Kenya Ferry Services compensated families a total of $486,840.

This is considered Kenya’s worst maritime accident.
