Edible cotton

Though cotton is very high in protein, it is not safe for consumption. Gossypol, which is an insect resistance substance found in the cotton plant contains a poisonous and deadly toxic that makes it unsafe to consume.

However, scientists at Texas A&M University, after years of research have come out with an edible genetically modified cotton plant which has been given the all-clear to be grown by farmers in the United States by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, according to Reuters.

The edible cotton, according to reports could be a very significant and important source of food in countries with high malnutrition and poverty.

Though not out yet, could this have a negative effect on the cotton-market in Africa?
