Candra Rogers, an assistant principal at Collins Intermediate School in Corsicana, Texas, was airlifted to a Dallas hospital after being injured during a “classroom disruption” involving a student.
The incident occurred last Thursday in a classroom with fewer than 10 students present. Authorities have not yet provided details on what led to the altercation or the nature of the injury.
Following the incident, the campus was placed on “hold” status, keeping students in their classrooms until it was deemed safe to move, according to WFAA. In a letter to parents, Principal Tiffany Boortz assured that no other students or staff were in danger during the incident.
The Navarro County District Attorney’s office confirmed that the male student involved in the incident has had a detention hearing and is now under parental supervision with an ankle monitor. Officials told WFAA that charges are pending and will be decided once the investigation is complete.
“We’re just going to wait and let the legal system play out and hopefully Mrs. Rogers will be OK and back at work soon,” Corsicana ISD spokesperson Raymond Lenix said.
Rogers, who joined the Corsicana school district last semester, is married to Eugene Rogers, the head football coach at Corsicana High School.
In a show of support for the Rogers family, the district said it will organize a “Jeans Day” fundraiser on Friday, with suggested donations of $2 for students and $5 for staff members.
“Jeans often mean comfort and style, but Friday they will mean more than that. Corsicana ISD staff and students can wear jeans on Friday as part of normal fundraising efforts on campuses,” the district said.
Rogers has since been home and recovering.
