Pele
Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pele is one of the most revered football legends in the world. Known for his outstanding football skills and unique ability to anticipate his opponents’ movements he has been pronounced the ‘FIFA Player of the Century’ by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) amongst other accolades he picked up over his 22-year-old career.
Apart from being given an honorary British Knighthood in 1997 by the Queen, Pele has held some ministerial positions in Brazil and on the global scene. At Santos in Brazil, Pele day is observed on November 19 to celebrate the anniversary of his 1000th goal scored. In that game, he caused an over 30-minute standstill as his fans and media men rushed on the field to share in his glorious achievement.
